APPRENTICESHIPS
During the summer months the Passport Program will host a six week apprenticeship at PSMS where students will explore different careers and engage in community service relevant to that particular field. Participants will be provided with a snack at each session that meets USDA nutritional snack guidelines. The areas of apprenticeship are listed below.
•Mindful Strategies Professional Counseling will provide direct instruction and be a field trip site so that
students can see how a professional counseling center operates. The students will also tour House of
Dawn Second Chance Home in Jonesboro, GA., a facility that utilizes counselors on a daily basis.
• Students will be provided with stress management training with the intention that they can pass this
information onto other young people. Following their training, the students’ stress management skills will
be evaluated and they will role-play how to talk to other young people about stress management. Once
the students are comfortable, they will visit House of Dawn Second Chance Home and offer stress training
to the youth in the shelter. Youth who participate in the training will fill out a questionnaire of the trainings
effectiveness.
• Students will also learn key skills to keep themselves safe during an emergency situation.
